Shark UV900 Series Troubleshooting

If you are having problems with your Shark UV900 Series Vacuum Cleaner, you are not alone. Many Shark UV900 Series owners experience issues with their vacuum cleaner from time to time, and it can be frustrating to deal with these problems.

I have problems with my Shark UV900 Series

Reported Shark UV900 Series Issues

What issue are you encountering?

Solution:

  • My vacuum has no or low suction
    • Plug in and turn on the vacuum.
  • My unit will not turn on or turn off on its own.
    • The vacuum cleaner is equipped with a motor-protective thermostat. If for some reason your vacuum overheats, the thermostat will automatically turn the unit off. Wait 60 minutes for the vacuum to cool; in the meantime follow the steps below.
  • The brush roll is not spinning
    • Ensure the unit is plugged in and is in setting II, Carpet mode. Step on the floor nozzle and tilt the handle back to engage the brush roll. Check the headlight indicator lights.
  • My vacuum is making an unusual noise
    • Remove the dust cup by sliding up the release tab on the side of the dust cup handle. Tilt the dust cup away from the wand, then lift it off.
    • Hold the dust cup over a trash receptacle, then press the upper release button on the back of the dust cup and the lid will drop open. Tap gently to empty the contents. Close the dust cup lid, pressing until it clicks into place.
    • Open the top lid on the dust cup by lifting the upper release tab on the front, near the Shark logo. Make sure no debris is blocking the airflow through the cone-shaped screen inside the dust cup.
    • Plug in and turn on the vacuum without the dust cup on.
  • Hair wrap
    • Self-cleaning brush roll technology actively removes hair from the brush roll while the vacuum is running. If you see hair wrapped around the brush roll, go to a place in your home with hard flooring or low-pile carpet.
    • Turn the vacuum on with the Power/Surface switch in setting I, Hard Floor mode.
    • Tilt the handle back to engage the brush roll and run the vacuum for 30 seconds.
    • Shut off the vacuum and unplug it. Check for hair on the brush roll. If some of the hair has been removed, the technology is working. Continue to vacuum in setting II, Carpet mode, to remove the rest of the hair.
  • There is a burning smell
    • If the smell is an out-of-the-box unit, This may be a new motor smell for the first couple of uses.
    • Turn off and unplug the vacuum. Inspect the power cord and plug for exposed wires, burns, or obvious damage.
  • The stroller is not spinning
    • Ensure the unit is plugged in and turned onto the Carpet setting
    • Tilt the handle back to engage the brush roll. Check the indicator light.

Shark UV900 Series Vacuum Cleaner Problems

Below are common issues and solutions for the Shark UV900 Series:

The Shark UV900 Series Power cord caught in brushrolls or floor nozzle

Solution:

  • To minimize the risk of power cord damage, DO NOT run the vacuum over the power cord. If this occurs, immediately shut off power to the vacuum and remove the cord from the brushrolls or nozzle.
  • Inspect the power cord and plug for any damage before use. DO NOT use the vacuum cleaner with a damaged cord or plug. Turn off all controls before plugging in or unplugging the vacuum cleaner. Store your vacuum cleaner with the power cord secured around the two cord hooks

The Shark UV900 Series is not picking up debris. No suction or light suction.

Solution:

  • Check filters to see if they need cleaning. Follow instructions for rinsing and air-drying the filters before reinstalling them in the vacuum.
  • Dust cup may be full; empty dust cup.
  • Check handle, hose, hose connections, nozzle, wand, pod, and accessories for blockages. Clear any blockages found.
  • If any string, hair, or carpet fibers are wrapped around the PowerFins® brush roll, carefully cut debris with scissors and remove it from the brush roll. See the Nozzle Maintenance section for more information

The Shark UV900 Series lifts area rugs.

Solution:

  •  Make sure the Power/Surface switch is set to Hard Floor (setting I).
  • Ensure the suction control slider on the handle is set to MIN.
  • Suction is powerful. Take care when vacuuming area rugs or rugs with delicately sewn edges

The Shark LA700 Series Brushrolls do not spin in carpet cleaning mode.

Solution:

  • If the headlight indicator light turns red, immediately turn off and unplug the vacuum. Remove the pod from the floor nozzle and clear any blockages. Reconnect the nozzle, plug in the vacuum, and turn on the power.
  • With the power on, recline the handle, which will automatically turn on the brushrolls.
  • If this problem persists on thick carpets, move the suction control slider to MIN.

The Shark UV900 Series turns off on its own or headlight indicator lights flash red.

Solution:

  • If your vacuum overheats, the thermostat will automatically turn off the motor. Perform the following steps to restart:
    1. Turn the vacuum off and unplug it.
    2. Empty the dust cup and clean the filters. See Emptying the Dust Cup and Cleaning and Replacing the Filters sections for more information.
    3. Check for blockages in hose, wand, floor nozzle, accessories, and inlet openings.
    4. Allow the unit to cool for a minimum of 60 minutes.
    5. Plug in the vacuum and turn it on

The Shark UV900 Series is emitting air that smells bad.

Solution:

  • Dust cup may be full; empty dust cup. Empty the dust cup after each use for optimal Odor Neutralizer Technology performance.
  • Check filters to see if they need cleaning. Follow instructions for rinsing and air-drying the filters before reinstalling them.
  • Check to make sure the odor cartridge is installed in the dial and the dial is installed in the nozzle.
  • Check the Odor Neutralizer Technology dial on the nozzle to see what setting is enabled.
  • If Odor Neutralizer Technology dial is at any setting from Low to High and the cartridge has been installed for 6 months or longer, consider replacing it.
  • If the odor cartridge is still emitting a scent but you dislike it, consider turning the intensity down, or reinstalling the dial in the nozzle without the cartridge.
  • If the Odor Neutralizer Technology cartridge is not emitting a scent, consider replacing it
