If you are having problems with your Shark UV540 Series Vacuum Cleaner, you are not alone. Many Shark UV540 Series owners experience issues with their vacuum cleaner from time to time, and it can be frustrating to deal with these problems.

Shark UV540 Series Vacuum Cleaner Problems

Below are common issues and solutions for the Shark UV540 Series:

The Shark UV540 Series Power cord caught in a brush roll or floor nozzle


  • To minimize the risk of power cord damage, DO NOT run the vacuum over the power cord. If this occurs, immediately shut off the power to the vacuum and remove the cord from the brush roll or nozzle.
  • Inspect the power cord and plug for any damage before use. DO NOT use the vacuum cleaner with a damaged cord or plug. Turn off all controls before plugging in or unplugging the vacuum cleaner. Store your vacuum cleaner with the power cord secured around the two cord hooks.

The Shark UV540 Series is not picking up debris. No suction or light suction


  • Check filters to see if they need cleaning. Follow instructions for rinsing and drying the filters before reinstalling. See Cleaning and Replacing the Filters for more information.
  • Dust cup may be full; empty dust cup.
  • Check hose, hose connections, wand, nozzle, and accessories for blockages; clear blockages if required.
  • Rotate the suction control collar on the handle clockwise to increase suction power.
  • If the dust cup is empty, and attachment inlets are clear, check for other blockages.

The Shark UV540 Series lifts area rugs


  • Suction is powerful. Take care when vacuuming area rugs or rugs with delicately sewn edges. Rotate the suction control collar counterclockwise to decrease suction power

The Shark UV540 Series Brushroll is jammed or has shut off.


  • Immediately turn off and unplug the vacuum, disconnect the nozzle, and remove the blockage before reconnecting and turning the vacuum back on. See Checking for Blockages for more information

The Shark UV540 Series turns off on its own or the indicator light flashes red


  • This vacuum is equipped with a motor-protective thermostat. The thermostat will automatically turn the suction motor off if your vacuum overheats. Perform the following steps to restart the thermostat:
    1. Turn the vacuum off and unplug it.
    2. Empty the dust cup and clean the filters (see Emptying the Dust Cup and Cleaning the Filters).
    3. Check for blockages in hose, wand, nozzle, accessories, and inlet openings.
    4. Allow the unit to cool for a minimum of 60 minutes.
    5. Plug in a vacuum and turn it on
