Shark AH400 Series Troubleshooting

If you are having problems with your Shark AH400 Series Vacuum Cleaner, you are not alone. Many Shark AH400 Series owners experience issues with their vacuum cleaner from time to time, and it can be frustrating to deal with these problems.

I have problems with my Shark AH400 Series

Reported Shark AH400 Series Issues

What issue are you encountering?


  • My unit will not turn on or turn off on its own
    • Inspect if there is any damage to the cord or the plug of the unit.
  • My unit has no or low suction.
    • What flooring or carpet are you experiencing this on?
    • Please ensure your “Suction Control” switch is closed by sliding it inwards. The switch is located in front of the wheel on the head of the vacuum.
      • Please empty the dust cup.
      • Remove the grill by pushing the “PUSH” button where it says “FILTER ACCESS”.
      • Clean the filter by shaking it over a trash can. Put the filter and the grill back on the unit.
      • Replace the dust cup. Please press “PUSH TO CLOSE” to seal it completely.
      • Open the brush-roll cover, and remove your brush-roll from the brush-roll cover.
      • Remove any clogs/debris as well as any wrapped debris from the brush roll (may require you to remove the roller completely and clear threads with scissors). Replace the brush roll and close the brush roll cover.
      • Please ensure your end gray cap that says “Pull” rotates freely.
      • If it doesn’t rotate freely, please remove the cap and clean underneath.
      • Put the grey cap back on, install the brush roll back, and close the brush roll cover completely.
      • Re-plug the unit and slide the switch all the way down
  • The brush roll is not spinning
    • Ensure the unit is plugged in and is in setting II, Carpet mode. Step on the floor nozzle and tilt the handle to engage the brush roll. Check the headlight indicator lights.
  • Unit is Vibrating and Abnormal Noise
    • Switch off the vacuum and unplug the unit.
    • Please open the brush roll cover and remove the brush roll.
    • Check to see if the end gray cap which says “Pull” is rotating freely.
  • Headlights don’t work
    • Plug in the unit and turn it on
  • Brushroll Cover won’t Close
    • Standing in front of the vacuum, the light grey cap should be on the left side.
    • The red part of the grey cap that says “PULL” should be facing straight up.
    • Please check for debris around the long black rectangular seal.

  • Brushroll Cover won’t Open
    • There are 2 slide buttons with a white triangle on it at the 2 ends of the brush roll cover. Please slide these out at the same time.
    • {Note: the buttons have a white triangle on it and need to be slid out at the same time with even force}

  • Filter Grill is hard to put back
    • Please ensure the dust cup cover is not broken.
    • Ensure the filter is properly aligned in the filter pocket.
    • Please align all the tabs and press down the grill till you hear a “CLICK” sound.


Shark AH400 Series Vacuum Cleaner Problems

Below are common issues and solutions for the Shark AH400 Series:

The Shark AH400 Series is not picking up debris. No suction or light suction.


  • Check filters to see if they need cleaning. Follow instructions for rinsing and drying the filters before re-inserting in the vacuum.
  • Dust cup may be full; empty dust cup.
  • Check hose, hose connections, nozzle, and accessories for blockages; clear blockages if required.
  • Remove any string, carpet fibers, or hair that may be wrapped around the brush roll.

The Shark AH400 Series lifts area rugs.


  • Suction is powerful. Take care when vacuuming area rugs or rugs with delicately sewn edges.
  • Turn off the unit to disengage the brush roll and restart with the Power slider switch.
  • Open the Suction Control slider on the floor nozzle to decrease suction power.

The Shark AH400 Series Brushroll does not spin.


  • If the Brushroll Indicator Light on the floor nozzle turns red, the brush roll has stopped spinning. Immediately turn off and unplug the vacuum and remove the blockage. Re-plug the unit into an electrical outlet and turn the vacuum on.
  • If the Brushroll Indicator Light on the floor nozzle is green, the blockage has been successfully cleared. If the light is still red, please contact customer service at 1-800-798-7398.
  • Check to make sure the brush roll was replaced correctly if it had been removed.
  • Ensure the brush roll garage of the floor nozzle is closed completely.
  • With the power on, recline the wand, which will automatically turn on the brush roll

The Shark AH400 Series Brushroll Garage will not close


  • Make sure the brush roll was reinserted correctly with the word “PULL” on the endcap facing up

The Shark AH400 Series Brushroll will not fit back inside the nozzle


  • Make sure the brush roll endcap is pressed firmly onto the brush roll.

The Shark AH400 Series Dust cup will not latch back onto the floor nozzle


  • Make sure both the brush roll garage and filter access are fully closed. Press firmly in the center of the dust cup on the floor nozzle until you hear a click. The unit will not run until the dust cup is closed and locked.

The Shark AH400 Series turns off on its own or the indicator light flashes red.


  • This vacuum is equipped with a motor-protective thermostat so the vacuum will shut off if it overheats. Should this occur, perform the following steps to restart the thermostat:
    1. Turn the vacuum off and unplug it.
    2. Empty the dust cup and clean the filters (see Maintenance section).
    3. Check for blockages on the brush roll and remove all hair and carpet fibers.
    4. Allow the unit to cool for a minimum of 45 minutes.
    5. Plug in the vacuum and turn it on.
